✨Meet Acoma - A Sweet, Dog-Friendly Girl in Need of a Foster Home!✨
Acoma (A1903108) is a sweet, loving (petite, 40lbs!) pit bull mix who’s looking for a foster home where she can continue to thrive and decompress. She’s currently at West Side Animal Shelter, but with low foot traffic and being a black dog, she’s unfortunately not getting the attention she deserves. Let’s change that!
Here’s a little more about her:
🐶Dog-Friendly: Acoma gets along well with dogs, especially those her size or larger. She absolutely adored her temporary 10-week-old foster puppy and has no issues playing gently with little ones. She’s also learned to accept corrections from the other dog, a male Poohuahua, after a moment of human intervention. She was overstimulated by him running away from her and not wanting to interact. So she got frustrated and overstimulated, which is very common. That Poohuahua tends to elicit a prey drive instinct in many dogs with his uncalled for corrections and skittish nature😛 she’s done great with a female dog that’s her size, who likes to think she’s pack leader. And has done amazing with a large male foster dog who is go with the flow and loves every dog. She’s pretty adaptable and would be fine to be fostered/adopted with dogs (or not!)
🐱Cats: Acoma has had a brief interaction with a cat and was easily redirected, so a home with cats *could* be possible. However, slow introductions are key, and some dogs do better with no cats at all. We’re still learning about her preferences, but she definitely could adjust with the right guidance. No cats is easiest. But I don’t want to put her in a box that she hasn’t proved herself to be!
-Crate & House Manners: She’s been wonderful, I MEAN WONDERFUL, in her crate and settles down easily. Whether you’re in the mood for a chill dog or one with some energy to spare, Acoma can flex to meet the vibe. She can absolutely play and be energetic, but is also content to relax when needed. I have found her sometimes throwing a toy in the air by herself, rolling on the floor, and doing silly things. But it’s clear that she knows how to settle and nap and chill and have good manners
-A Little Shy, but So Sweet: Acoma has some emotional scars from being abandoned in her home by her owner. but it doesn’t define her. She’s a bit more on the shy side than outgoing, especially with sudden movements or loud noises. Her previous sleepover foster emphasized her shyness… but I have only seen mild shyness from her. I think any shyness she has… just adds to her charm. She’s made great progress with socialization and would do well in a quiet, loving environment that gives her time to feel comfortable.
-To note: She reportedly has jumped a 4 foot wall. But has not jumped my 6ft wall or my 4ft gate, or my indoor 3-4ft baby gates. I have many baby gates with dogs and cats behind them… and she has greeted dogs and cats behind the baby gates and hasn’t shown the drive to want to jump them. She did get startled at one point in my backyard and bee-lined for the 4-foot gate but was quickly redirected. Like I just said “Hey” and she disengaged and wiggled and smiled back to me lol. I never let dogs unattended outside.
-Kid-Friendly: Reportedly, Acoma had a sleepover with kids a while ago and did well. I have not seen her with kids though. She’s overall a very gentle soul and hasn’t jumped much and isn’t bouncing off the walls. She hasn’t appeared mouthy and takes treats gently
Acoma would do fine with no dogs, dogs that want to play, dogs that don’t want to play, etc! As mentioned, she’s down for whatever the vibes are. Acoma deserves to find a loving foster home where she can get the attention and care she needs to overcome her past. She’s a lovely, adaptable dog who can fit in many different environments, and I’m confident she’ll make a fantastic companion for the right family.
If you’re interested in fostering or adopting Acoma or want to meet her, PKR would be more than happy to bring her to you and introduce her to your dogs! Let’s help this sweet girl find her perfect home and hopefully a foster home so she doesn’t continue to mentally deteriorate. ❤️
